By integrating Environmental Humanities into East Asian Studies, EASC seeks to foster a deeper comprehension of how historical, social, and cultural factors have shaped environmental practices and policies in the region. This interdisciplinary approach enables students and scholars to explore the intricate relationships between humans and their environments in East Asia, examining how literature, philosophy, religion, and art reflect and influence ecological perspectives. Some of the issues covered by this theme include (but are not limited to):
- Urban-rural relations
- Architecture and urban ecosystems
- Philosophy and religion
- Representations of the environment in various media
