70th Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs

Open to participants across the world, the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs is an annual conference bringing together scholars of Asian studies from the US Midwest Region (North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio). The MCAA seeks to promote Asian Studies at the university, secondary, and primary levels. Our mission is to encourage scholarly interchange between Asianists in the American Midwest with colleagues from other parts of the US and around the world.

The 70th annual meeting will be a hybrid event hosted by and held at Indiana University Bloomington from October 29 – 31, 2021. We would be delighted to see you in person on the Bloomington campus or participating at a distance from anywhere in the world.


Registration fees (fees are waived for Student Paper Award Winners)

Call for Proposals

**Notices of proposal acceptance have now been sent to everyone who submitted a proposal. If you have not heard from the Conference Program Committee by September 3, please contact Michael Brose.**

We are soliciting panels, roundtables, and individual papers in all fields dealing with East Asia, Inner Asia, Northeast Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, the Asian Diaspora, and topical and comparative panels. Faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students, as well as independent scholars, are encouraged to share their work and attend the conference.

Proposal submission deadline: July 23, 2021

Proposal guidelines

  • Paper or Panel Title: Individual Paper Abstract limit to maximum 250 words; must include (1) paper title and (2) paper abstract
  • Panel proposals: Include (1) names of all presenters, panel organizer, and panel discussan,t; and (2) panel title and all individual paper titles. Don't have your discussant identified? Please indicate your need in #1.
