This asynchronous NCTA short course guides participants on an exploration of traditional Japanese art and architecture through the lens of the aesthetic
principles known as wabi and sabi. Four modules will explicate the historical origins of wabi and sabi in medieval poetics and the tenets of Zen Buddhism, consider specific examples of these principles as applied to the design of material objects and architectural spaces, and analyze how their definition and influence has evolved over time both within Japan and globally. Open to any K-12 teacher, and of special interest to art, literature, and social studies educators.
Each module, with readings, images/video, and online discussion, compose one session. Participants may sign up for one, some, or all four of the sessions. Each online session is open for two weeks, is asynchronous, and requires about two hours of input (watching the lecture, reading, discussion online). Participants may view and respond any time within the 2-week period.
