Delve into the multifaceted landscape of gender perceptions in South Korea with this thought-provoking course. Through an interdisciplinary lens, we will navigate the complexities of gender intersections in various facets of South Korean culture, including literature, K-pop, traditional music, and K-drama. From the emergence of feminist movements advocating for women's rights to the evolving acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community, we will examine the dynamic socio-cultural forces shaping contemporary gender discourse in South Korea. By analyzing the blurred boundaries and shifting paradigms of gender in K-pop, we will uncover how popular culture both reflects and influences societal attitudes towards gender roles and expressions. Through close examination of literary works, musical compositions, and visual narratives, participants will gain insights into the intricate tapestry of gender dynamics within South Korean society. This course contains some synchronous components and all scheduled times will be in EDT.

In this asynchronous course participants will explore Chinese history through the lens of period dramas and literature. Participants will examine the concept of romance and marriage, learn about court politics and intrigue, explore traditional outfits and hairstyles, as well as touch on the realm of the fantastic and mythical. How do period dramas allow us to understand and experience the past and what do they tell us about the societies they reflect?
