Led by Morgan McLaughlin, the Fall book group is a six-week book group focusing on Transcontinental stories of women from East Asia. This book group will examine one manga, two graphic novels, and one prose-based memoir. The books that will be focused on are Rock and Roll Love by Misako Rocks, Just So Happens by Fumio Obata, Messy Roots by Laura Gao, and Beautiful Country by Qian Julie Wang.

Asian Book Club Spring 2025

Led by Morgan McLaughlin, the Spring book group is a seven-week book group focusing on women telling survival stories from East Asia. This group will examine four books, one children’s book, two prose-based memoirs and one Manhwa (Korean graphic novel). The books that will be focused on are Comfort Woman by Mara Henson, Little White Duck by Na Liu, Sweet Mandarin by Helen Tse, and a participant’s choice book of either Bad Friends by Ancco OR The Waiting by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim.

Past Book Clubs
Led by Morgan McLaughlin this asynchronous book club will focus on modern issues in Korea as depicted in two books. The first book, Nothing to Envy, Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick, focuses on individuals telling their own story. The second book, Moms by Yeong-shin Ma, focuses on the growing issue of what it means to be a woman in South Korea when you've devoted everything to your husband and kids but now feel completely alone.
Moderated by veteran teacher Morgan McLaughlin, this asynchronous session will run for six weeks, beginning Monday October 16 until November 17, 2023. The books are Yakuza Moon by Shoko Tendo and Louise Heal, and My Only Child by Nina Wang.
